Tiger

Black Retired Racing Greyhound - Tiger

Tiger (Star Tiger) is a retired racing greyhound from the UK who arrived to the US on May 1! Tiger is a gorgeous, sweetheart of a big boy at around 85 lbs, and the kennel staff described him as “a gentle giant”. His foster family calls him “Buddy” because he wants to be everyone’s best friend! He is a very easy-going dog, and seems to really love being a greyhound! Tiger’s foster family says he is a helper. He will escort you around the house while you complete complex, difficult tasks like pouring a cup of coffee or walking to the refrigerator, just to make sure you don’t need any assistance. He loves affection and attention, especially ear rubs and gazing fondly at his humans.

Tiger is 4 1/2 years old, born October 20 in Ireland. He retired from the UK’s Romford racetrack in January after 64 races, following an injury in which he tore ligaments in his wrist. He is all healed up and if you watch his racing videos online, you will see he is every bit as fast as he once was!

Tiger’s favorite game to play in the yard is frisbee. He doesn’t quite understand fetch, but he will gallop around the frisbee when it lands, pick it up, and run around the yard with it. He has a few other yard toys he loves to play with the same way, and he will chase after them for as long as you are willing to throw them. Because he wants to please you, he’ll play long past when he should go get a drink or lay down, so it’s important to call it quits eventually so he can catch his breath after zoomies! He also loves walks, and goes crazy for his dog walker. But a leisurely stroll around the block is taxing for him in this summer weather, so be prepared to make him take it easy on hot days!

He is just a bit too tall for a 48″ crate, so his foster family recommends using an exercise pen. He does have a high prey drive, and is not cat safe or tiny-dog safe, so he likely needs leash-walked or a 6′ fence. Although Tiger did not care for the cat he met and is a bit too interested in the neighbor’s Shih-Tzu on the other side of the fence, he has done well when meeting other types of small, medium, and large dogs at the local farmers’ markets and pet stores. And of course, he loves all people, including kids of all ages!

Despite all of this lovable energy, he spends the majority of his day sleeping and has been a great houseguest for his foster family. At least one of them is home most of the time, so he is typically only alone two or three hours a day right now. However, he’s been alone up to six hours without incident. He sleeps easily through the night in his foster family’s room, and he has no issues with stairs or hardwood floods.

Tiger absolutely loves to eat, and despite having a slow feeder, inhales his food at a seemingly-impossible speed. He eats approximately five cups of food a day, over the course of three meals, and should be supervised while eating food or treats for this reason – but he is very good at eating around other dogs, and will swap places with his foster sister at the end of meals so they can lick the crumbs from each other’s bowls. He has a high tolerance for other dogs or people being in his personal space generally.

If Tiger sounds like a good fit for you, please fill out an application! His foster family would be glad to tell you why they think he is one of the best dogs they’ve ever met!
