Meet Spinner! This sweet boy is three and a half years old, born April 21, 2022, and 75 pounds. He was a kennel “favourite” in the UK, where he raced before arriving to American Greyhound in October.
Spinner is full of three-year-old energy at times, though he also loves to nap. He is a HUGE snuggler. He LOVES to be on the couch, and would very much be content to cuddle all the time. As a foster, he is not normally allowed on the couch, though Foster Mom occasionally makes exceptions because he enjoys it so thoroughly. He will lay his head in your lap for ear scritches, lean on your leg, or give kisses – he is a very affectionate boy.
Spinner also ADORES toys, especially if they make sounds. He loves to catch them midair, and his favorite game is to have Foster Dad throw him toy after toy while he catches each one. His foster family says he is better at catching toys than any greyhound they have met. He will also shake them, step on them, and chomp on them to get them to make sounds – he is especially fascinated when he finds one that makes an unusual noise. After playtime, he needs a nap to re-charge!
House life is still new to him, but each day he is settling in more and more. He sleeps through the night and has no issues with housetraining. He walks well on a leash. Conveniently, he is the right height to receive ear scritches while on a walk, and his dog walker says he will heel himself to walk next to her so he can be pet the whole time. When he is out in the yard, he prefers to do his business and come right back to the door where the humans are. He really enjoys being around his people.
Spinner is extremely go-with-the-flow, and his attention is easily redirected. He is a food-motivated hound, though, and will appear out of nowhere if he hears a treat bag being open. He needs a slow feeder so he does not scarf his food down, and he will help himself to people leftovers if given the opportunity (including on counters). This is a work-in-progress and he’s shown improvements with training!
As long as he gets a treat, he will go right into his crate. When left home alone, he does fairly well, but will sometimes roo or whine a bit. His foster family says he is getting increasingly better at being home alone for longer periods of time, and is likely just going through the adjustment of being in a strange house rather than a familiar kennel. He is an excellent car rider, and will immediately lay down and nap the whole time, no matter if the destination is 5 minutes or 5 hours away.
Spinner does not seem to be cat-safe, though he has not been officially tested. He has gone out to the pet store and has also met neighbor dogs, and seems to do well with all except the smallest and fluffiest dogs (shih tzus, bichons, etc.). Those very small dogs pique his interest, but it’s possible that he would be fine once he meets them – he has not been allowed close enough for him to really investigate. He would be fine with just about any other type of dog, and gets along well with his senior greyhound foster sister. He helped hand out candy to trick-or-treaters on Halloween, and seemed to enjoy being pet by adults and kids of all ages, including politely tolerating a few toddlers with “grabby hands”.
Spinner will make an amazing dog for whoever adopts him. Want to meet this sweetheart? Complete your adoption application today!
