Ray is an adoptable galgo who is six years old, and this sweetheart can’t wait to meet his adoptive family! Ray came to American Greyhound from Scooby Medina shelter in Spain on May 8. He was very vocal when in his cage at the shelter, however, he became very docile once out on a leash. This seems true in his foster home setting as well.
When someone new enters the house, Ray goes on high alert, even with kids. He is still learning to trust, and prefers not to interact with strangers when in his home, which is his safe space. He is a very vigilant guard dog and will keep a close eye on those he does not yet know. However, when on a leash, he is much more willing to accept pets from strangers!
One thing that has definitely changed is Ray’s cat status. Although he tested cat-workable at the shelter, his foster home tells us that Ray must have been feeling particularly lenient that day. We now know he is a “no-cats” kind of dog, although he can be redirected away from small dogs.
Ray is a big fan of running around with the other sighthounds in the pack at his foster home, and has even been known to offer a play bow or two in response to an invitation to play from the resident pittie. The couch is definitely Ray’s happy place. He prefers to spend his nights snoozing on the sofa rather than in the bedroom kennel, and enjoys napping with his head on Foster Dad’s lap.
Ray is a dream on a leash when going for walks (most of the time). If he gets startled, he will try to bolt, so his adopters should know to hold on tight! Otherwise, he is calm and easy to handle when out and about. He is mostly house-trained, although if he is kenneled, he will wake up during the night around 3 AM and request to go outside, and will potty near the door if ignored. If he is on the couch, he seems to be fine to sleep through the night.
This sweet boy has not had any time completely alone as an only dog, since his foster home is full of doggie friends, but he has spent time kenneled while the humans are out of the house. He handles this fairly well, but can be anxious when first kenneled.
Ray would love an adopter who will feed him treats, take him for car rides, and provide plenty of ear scritches. He is especially fond of hot dogs, chicken, and other tasty snacks he can graze from your plate.
He would do best in a quieter home with at least one confident dog friend and no cats or small critters. His future adopters will get to see even more of his true personality come out as he settles in, but they should be ready to exercise patience. While Ray enjoys affection, he also likes his own space and prefers to seek out human interaction on his own time. After all he and the other galgos have endured, who could blame him for being cautious?
