Home/Adoptable Dogs/JibJab & Tubbs

JibJab & Tubbs

Meet JibJab & Tubbs! JibJab is approximately six years old and is all black in color. His best friend, Tubbs, is a fawn who is estimated to be around two years old. Both boys are happy and playful, and weigh just over 45 lbs. You never see one of these dogs without the other! They are a bonded pair and must be adopted out and kept together.

These boys were found as strays in Hawaii during the Maui wildfires in 2023. When people fled the burning island, they left their animals behind and the Hawaiian shelters were filled beyond capacity. The shelter that rescued JibJab and Tubbs reached out to many shelters and rescues across the US, which is how they ended up with American Greyhound.

When “Jibby and Tubbsy” first arrived, they were used to living outside and had no house manners. A professional dog trainer was hired to work with them, and they are now domesticated and have pretty good house manners (as long as you don’t consider the inability to leave the bathroom door open a deal-breaker! Their foster family says Tubbs thinks toilet paper is a wonderful chew toy!)

Because they were rescued from wildfires, JibJab still has burn scars up the backs of his legs and on his butt and tail. Luckily, he has otherwise recovered well. When he first arrived, his fur was singed, and he had burned feet as well with basically no skin on his foot pads. Tubbs was picked up by Hawaiian Animal Control sooner, so he has no marks or scars on him.

While American Greyhound has never recommended putting two animals in the same crate before, this “Dynamic Duo” need to be kept in the same crate (albeit a large one). They are truly bonded in every sense, and need to be together. Having grown up in an island paradise, they love being outside and would love a fenced yard where they can lay in the sun all afternoon. However, not having a yard is not a deal breaker as long as their family is willing to take them out frequently.

JibJab & Tubbs currently live with a retired racer and two lurchers, so are accustomed to living with large dogs. They crate easily, and spend time in there when their foster family is at work. They are not afraid of thunderstorms or loud noises, although their foster family’s local city fireworks are close enough that they were medicated during the Fourth of July evening.

The pair love to wrestle around with each other, play with squeaky toys, and go for walks. They enjoy treats, and they are big fans of napping on the furniture. They will also let you know when someone is at your house or even just walking past. Because of their past, they take a minute or two to trust strangers. JibJab is quicker to warm up, while Tubbs will watch new people from the safety of his open crate. He will venture out to sniff and then quickly retreat, repeating this until he feels comfortable enough to let the new person touch him. However, once they are trusting and at home with new people, Tubbs is actually more outgoing than JibJab – something no one believes when initially meeting them!

These two are great on a leash, though they do pull when kids approach. They love kids! But their new family will need to understand that these sweet boys will take a minute or two to get comfortable and trust a new family, so it is important that they only be adopted to someone who is committed to patiently working through issues and will not give up and return them. JibJab & Tubbs are definitely worth the wait and the work, and they will be loving and loyal family members for their lucky adopter.

If your house is too calm currently and needs a bit of excitement, we know just the two playful boys to help with that! Submit an application today.

Adoption Fee: $500 (total for both dogs)
