Fostering greyhounds, galgos, and other sighthounds is truly the heart and soul of our operation. Without our foster families, American Greyhound would simply not exist.
We rely on our dedicated foster team to house our adoptable dogs, since we do not have a physical kennel space. Our foster families take newly arrived hounds into their homes and help them adjust to life as a pet while treating them like one of their own dogs. When a hound finds their forever home, the foster family says goodbye and prepares to help the next available dog.
There are no words to express for how much fostering means to the dogs in our care. When someone opens their heart and home to a sighthound in need, it doesn’t just help one dog. Every dog we place in a foster home creates an open space in the shelters we partner with. That makes room for another hound to begin their path to adoption, too.

What would it take for you to say “Yes!” to fostering?
Before being adopted, your own hound likely had a foster home. Just imagine if that person had said, “No, I’m sure someone else will foster.” Without a willing foster family, your sweet hound may never have found their way to you!
One of the most common refrains we hear is, “Oh, I could never handle saying goodbye to the dogs if I fostered!” We know firsthand that it can be bittersweet to watch a hound you’ve grown to love walk out of your life. But you get the satisfaction of knowing they’re headed off to their happily-ever-after, and you have the opportunity to help even more dogs in their place!
You provide the food and the love; we’ll handle everything else!
American Greyhound covers all vet care for foster hounds. We will be glad to send new foster homes a crate or x-pen to use. We also are here any time to provide support. That might be helping you troubleshoot housetraining or other issues, finding a temporary foster during your vacation, or simply reminding you that you’re making a difference!
We ask that you provide your foster hound’s meals and treats. If you need financial assistance with food expenses, please contact your foster coordinator for details.
