Bear is a curious, gentle, super sweet boy! He is four and half years old, around 80lbs, and ready to follow you everywhere you go! This retired racer came to American Greyhound from the Romford kennels in the UK.
Bear has not been cat tested yet, but does show interest in rabbits, squirrels, and birds…and frogs! His foster family tells us that Bear has not yet learned his lesson with toads – he continues to find them and immediately spit them out! (Maybe they taste different here in the US compared to his home back in the UK!) Although he perks up like he wants to chase the neighborhood critters, he easily moves on with redirection on walks.
Soft as a plushie, Bear loves squeaky toys and squishy dental toys to the point that he’ll bite one after the other until he finally chooses a favorite. This can keep him busy until he dozes off for a long nap. Although he is content with his toys when inside, he also loves to be out exploring! He gets to go to a park if it’s not raining, but would love a fenced yard to enjoy the freedom to trot around whenever he can.
Bear gets along very well with the resident dogs in his foster home. His foster family shares that it is comical to see the three of them take over each other’s spots like musical chairs when one gets up for a new toy! Bear handles the bossy vibes of his foster greyhound brother with patience, and is sensitive to the size difference of his whippet brother when they play (which is often!). The smaller dog leaps from bed to bed and sometimes gets right in Bear’s face to sniff him, and this has not caused any problems. Bear is very tolerant and social, and has not shown any reactivity or resource guarding around toys or food.
Bear does well on hard surfaces and takes stairs carefully but confidently. He sleeps soundly through the night in his crate in Foster Mom and Dad’s bedroom, but does start to bark if left alone. He has made some good progress with this, however, and is becoming more comfortable every day. (It is fairly normal for a retired racer to be anxious when they are first left alone, since they are so used to living in a busy kennel full of dogs, with people coming and going all the time!)
Bear has not had any accidents in the house, and goes as soon as he is let outside. Since he arrived in the US just in time for the Fourth of July holiday, he was put to the fireworks test and passed with his own flying colors! He was surprised by the big boomers, but luckily did not seem spooked.
His foster family says, “Ultimately, this boy has been a dream since day one, and will make anyone feel grateful to have him!”
