As the sun shone brightly over the frigid waters of Lake Michigan, American Greyhound
began a new decade. Our brave polar bears raised nearly $10,000 to help our hounds,
about double what was raised in the previous two swims combined. These funds will
help us save at a minimum, thirty dogs, and possibly more, dependant on vet costs, etc.
And that is just the beginning.
We are already hard at work getting the last dogs from Dairyland Greyhound Park, in
Kenosha WI, down to us, vetted, and into foster homes. We expect to have this
accomplished sometime next week. We are then expecting to see large numbers of
dogs from tracks around the country displaced by viable racers from Dairyland. These
dogs should keep our foster homes full through the spring.
Later this month, we will begin a partnership with “2nd Chance at Life”, a program which
places retired greyhounds into prisons for an intensive 10 week training program, with
an inmate caretaker. The dogs will receive basic obedience training and the inmate
caretaker receives the opportunity to care for a fellow creature and quite possibly
receive unconditional love for the first time in his or her life. I had the opportunity to
meet Dusty, a graduate of this program, and I cannot say enough good things about
him. I feel this program will be a tremendously positive experience for the inmates,
American Greyhound, the adoptive families, and most important the greyhounds.
We are beginning to expand our geographical boundaries as well. We recently began
working with the Petco store in Goshen, Indiana, holding meet and greets as we have for
years in Northwest Indiana. Carol Theodorovich will be the North Central Indiana
coordinator for this area, and you can find her contact information on the contact us
page. We have a history of families adopting dogs in this area; now we will have better
support for those folks.
We are just beginning to plan a greyhound gala and charity auction for late October,
early November. Time, date, and location will be finalized soon. We are looking forward
to a wonderful evening of fun and support for our long-legged friends.
Remember this is YOUR organization… and you can help in many ways.
ADOPT
• Consider adopting ( Adoption Form ) one (or more) of our available greyhounds.
I’ve found that when no one else likes me, they still do!
BECOME A FOSTER

wonderful hound’s life. ( Foster Application )

our events page for times and locations.
• Make plans to attend our gala and auction (more coming soon!), we’re planning
on a greyt time!
• And, of course, don’t forget our annual picnic. If you’ve been to one of them, you’ll
never want to miss another (sometime in mid-September)!

• Put American Greyhound in your will.
• Become a Greyt Friend, monthly renewing sponsorship for foster dogs
VOLUNTEER

If you’d like specific information about your organization or have ideas that we can use,
please contact me at any time. I love to talk about retired racing greyhounds and how
together we can give them a better chance at life.
